Opportunity to bring nonprofit afterschool science programs to local children

Hands On Science Outreach (HOSO) announces a call for nominations for
participants in "Cultivating Curiosity: Growing Science Enrichment." Those selected
to take part will represent the next generation of leaders in HOSO’s informal
science enrichment programs for children from Pre-K through sixth grade.
Participants will attend a four-day training opportunity in Waterloo, Iowa, and
return to their communities equipped with all the tools needed to make
research-based, science inquiry activities available to local elementary-aged children
in small group settings. Partial funding for “Cultivating Curiosity” is made
possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Please note the deadline to submit nominations is Feb. 16, 2004.

for those selected to take part is $300.

About Hands On Science Outreach
HOSO, an international nonprofit organization, provides informal science
enrichment programs that stimulate "science in your life" awareness and the fun of
active involvement in experiments, games, music and projects. The
community-based program includes activities, instructor training and hands-on materials
that go home with the children. Classes are structured as eight one-hour
sessions focused on a specific theme with activities consistent with the National
Science Education Standards. HOSO's small class size and age appropriate
groupings allow full interaction between students and the material, the instructor
and themselves.

Who should take part in “Cultivating Curiosity”?
Anyone interested in bringing informal science enrichment opportunities to
local children. HOSO works cooperatively with public school systems, private and
pre-schools, day care centers, home schoolers, parent organizations, museums,
colleges, businesses, government agencies, recreation centers and community
groups.

“Cultivating Curiosity” will train up to two representatives from each state
to manage HOSO programs locally. The specific duties of a HOSO Coordinator
may vary by location.

Responsibilities of HOSO Coordinators often include:
-Involving local organizations
-Identifying, training and observing Adult Leaders who work with the children
taking HOSO classes
-Interfacing with a parent volunteer at each school/site to distribute
