When I was at The Field Museum years ago, we always had peekaboo windows into halls being renovated.  I'm not sure they had any tremendous impact -- they were mostly a way of decorating construction walls, and mollifying visitors who found exhibits closed.  (We were only doing casework; no structural work.)

I remember hearing at a conference about an historic house museum that was open as it underwent renovation, and attendance dropped.  So they used their renovation as the basis of a series of home remodelling programs, and attendance boomed.
