JOB POSTING

TITLE: Director of Education				
DEPT:	Education	
REPORTS TO:	VP, Programs and Exhibits
AVAILABLE: May 2005
HOURS: Full-time; 35 hours/week

JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Education is responsible for educational leadership; development, delivery and evaluation of programs reaching over 1.5 million Aquarium visitors, youth, and community members; planning and tracking of $1.4 million annual budget; and supervision and professional development for 25 FTE staff and over 150 volunteers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:	
* Develop vision and strategy for education at the New England Aquarium in support of the Aquarium's mission, in collaboration with the Vice President for Programs and Exhibits.
* Manage exhibit interpretation, on-site and outreach programs including program development, implementation, and evaluation.
* Budget development, tracking, and forecasting for the Education Department.
* Manage Education Department staff, including goal-setting, performance evaluation, and professional development. 
* Represent education programs within and outside the Aquarium for purposes of advocacy, partnership development, fundraising, and civic and professional leadership.
* Coordinate department efforts with Conservation, Research, Animal Husbandry, Design and Exhibits, Marketing, and Visitor Services.
* Collaborate with the Development Department on grant proposal development, administration, and reporting.
* Represent the Aquarium through conference presentations, publications, and professional associations.
* Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice President of Programs and Exhibits.
* Maintain regular and predictable attendance to ensure effective job performance.

EXPERIENCE:  
* Minimum of five to seven years experience in informal science education
* Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise staff
* Project management experience
* Demonstrated experience team building
* Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, both oral and written
* Environmental teaching experience and expertise in marine science
* Demonstrated experience in budget development and management 
* Significant experience in working with diverse racial/socioeconomic populations

EDUCATION:	  Advanced degree in aquatic science or education, with significant training/experience in informal science education, program development, as well as staff development, coordination, and evaluation.
