There is a long history in science museums of "pedal this to power that to get some meaningful visceral measurement of energy required to do X".  I just thought of a fun one to add to the mix:

Take the hood and the engine out of a car and put a bicycle there  
that they have to peddle to move the car.   it's a natural group  
activity- the pedaler is just an engine- someone else drives, and I'm sure the engine will get humorously heckled.  Ideally there would be  
a light car and a heavy one.   I'm sure you can get a hummer cheap  
these days.

I remember a Gahan Wilson cartoon of this.   The gas station  
attendant opens the hood and the guy chained in there says "For god's sake, call the cops!"
