My favorite doctor says it is possible for someone with a nut allergy
(not peanut, which is a legume rather than a true nut, and so has
different proteins) to react to handling an animal in contact with the
shells, but it is not very likely. Also nut allergies are generally not
as severe as peanut allergies.
David Smith, Da Vinci Discovery Center, who is allergic to many pollens,
but luckily not to foods.

Does anyone on the list have experience with using crushed walnut shells
as a bedding material for animals (in our case, a lizard) and then
having an allergic reaction from someone handling the animal? So many
kids have severe peanut allergies, it makes you think twice about using
any kind of nut.
