Anne,

A few years ago I evaluated a youth program at the Illinois State Museum,
the Museum Tech Academy (MTA). This program focused on archeology,
information technology, encouraged interest in STEM careers. (So not exactly
like your program). Field trips focused on visits to colleges and places
where people pursued science-based careers. Some youth programs like MTA,
aim to involve parents/guardians involved in the program. MTA invited
parents and younger siblings to go on the field trips. Some of the parents
made this a special opportunity to spend time with this child. In other
cases whole families (mom, dad, and three other children went along). In
other cases, just a younger or older sibling came on the trip. This really
boosted shared experiences among family members, introduced younger siblings
to the program, and in a couple cases (where the parent was a scientist)
provided an extra-expert. It also changed the behavior in the van with all
those parents and little kids in the mix. The evaluator had a great time
too--I have great memories of visit to a fish hatchery and learning about
how the State of Illinois stocks lakes.

They kept the food simply. The teachers unpacked a cooler and everyone made
their own balony sandwiches and grabbed apples and chips. They ate outside.
This reduced the differences in available pocket money among the kids and
the "eating lunch with my friends and you can't sit with us" business of
field trips.

The Karli White and Beth Shea at the MTA program at the Illinois State
Museum could be contacted for more good ideas about their field trips.

Best Regards,

Carey
