EXPLORATORIUM CHIEF TAKES POST IN ENGLAND
from San Francisco Chronicle

Goéry Delacôte, director of the Exploratorium, San Francisco's pathbreaking
science museum, announced Tuesday he was leaving to head a similar science
center in England -- and he aims to link the two museums as the "bipolar
hub" of a network of hands-on centers throughout Europe.

Taking charge of the museum At-Bristol -- after 15 years leading an
institution whose budget has grown from $7 million to $28 million and with
a staff now numbering 400 -- is an opportunity to spread the philosophy of
the Exploratorium's founder, the late Frank Oppenheimer, Delacôte said in
an interview Tuesday.

"It will certainly be difficult leaving this institution, which has become
so strong and is still growing," he said. "But I'll remain closely
connected here, and linking the Bristol center and the Exploratorium
together as the hub of similar centers in every country in Europe will be a
unique opportunity."
