I've had good luck with Karo syrup instead of glycerin for bubbles and it is a lot cheaper.

The MSDS on Glycerol, or glycerine is your best source of information.  Flushing pure glycerine down the drain is probably not a good idea, mixing it with water creates a highly biodegradable mixture however.  Wikipedia also has useful info.
