I'm not sure I would use the words "kid-friendly" and "bacteria" in  
the same sentence.  If you plate out bacteria, especially from the  
types of sources you mention, there is an excellent chance that some  
of the colonies will be pathogens, so you need to be pretty careful  
about who handles the materials!
