Hi Preeti:

You might also want to talk with a scientist or educator (or both) at the
North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences located in Raleigh, North
Carolina.

When at the Visitor Studies Association conference in 2012, I recall
fabulous science labs and a wonderful mix of collaborations and learning
experiences between scientists and program participants/visitors.

Hi Preeti,

We have done something along these lines in the Forum program here at the
MOS Boston. For the last two years, my colleagues and I have supervised
some amazing youth as part of an intensive two-month summer participatory
environmental health assessment program called "Planning for Healthier
Cities". The students are hired as interns as part of a larger summer
youth internship that takes place here through our Youth Programs
department. The students learn to use instruments, analyize and interpret
data, share and translate findings to public audiences, and then engage
visitors in conversations around the societal implications of their
efforts.

The students do background research on issues such as air and water
quality or the urban heat island effect and then co-create a research
question for an urban-focused environmetal health impact assessment with a
panel of expert mentors from the fields of environmental health, urban
planning, biology, and chemistr. They then design experimental protocols
and gather data out in public spaces to investigate their question of
interest. After analyzing and interpreting their data, the youth then are
required to create different kinds of engagement activities and events
that share the subject and methods of their research with peers,
stakeholders, and members of the public, which are presented to these
different kinds of audiences in and out of the Museum. The experience
culminates with a forum that is planned and implemented completely by the
youth around planning for healthier cities in light of their summer work.

Christine Castle was kind enough to recently feature our project on her
great Museum Education Monitor page here:
http://forum.mccastle.com/2013/09/planning-for-healthier-cities-summer.html
. Let me know if you'd like more information or would be interested in
collaborating along these lines. The experience has really been wonderful
and transformative for us and we've received great feedback from the youth
who have participated thus far.

Best,

- David...
