Hi Marcie,

Contact the folks at the Catawba Science Center. They have had a lot of experience with this. Also, I have just completed designing one of these for a local museum. The important thing to think about in making a travelling version is the plumbing. Make sure that you provide a system that is easy to take apart and put together. Also, use stainless steel fittings of the type used in sanitary systems.these cost quite abit but thye are worth it. Also, you will need to sanitize the water; there are small and relaible units made that use UV to do this. Fianlly, in all probability the holding tank and the table will need to separate for transport.Spend a lot of time on the way these two units are coupled together.Careful thought here will yield many happy hours of us later; conversely, a bad design willhave set-up techs damning you endlessly!

Sand is fine, as long as you plan to change it regularly. Therefore, whatever you do make the removal of the sand and the cleanin g of the unit easy.

Hope it works for you!

> We are planning a stream table with sand for a traveling exhibition (for children ages 3 to 8) and would like to know other people's experiences with design, maintenance, and safety. How has sand worked? Are there other materials to use instead of sand that work better (e.g. pea gravel, plastic pellets)?
