Learn how the arts can strengthen science education and spark creativity in the 21st-Century American workforce at The Art of Science Learning: Shaping the 21st-Century Workforce Conference, hosted by the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) on the UCSD Campus.

The Conference will bring together 200 scientists, educators, teaching artists, business leaders and policymakers from around the country to explore ways in which arts-based learning can enhance STEM skills and strengthen the innovative capacity of the present and future STEM workforce .

Conference highlights will include keynotes by Harvey White, co-founder of Qualcomm, in conversation with John Eger, and Larry Rosenstock, founder and CEO of High Tech High, as well as remarks by Calit2 Director Larry Smarr, and Calit2 UCSD Division Director Ramesh Rao. Dr. Todd Siler will lead a Metaphorming Workshop, where participants will collaboratively develop and model ideas using hands-on arts and science-based techniques.

Participants will:

* Explore educational strategies that foster scientific literacy through arts-based experiential learning

* Learn about arts-based projects, initiatives and curricula that have successfully attracted students to STEM disciplines and retained their interest

* Experience first-hand innovative techniques that use the arts to develop creativity, critical thinking, collaborative and communication skills in learners of all ages

Conference participants will also have the opportunity to tour Calit2.

We thank our partners in producing this conference: The Balboa Park Learning Institute, CISA3 and CALIT2 at UCSD, High Tech High, The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, San Diego Science Alliance, and the San Diego Visual Arts Network. The Art of Science Learning: Shaping the 21st-Century Workforce is an initiative funded in part by the National Science foundation. Other conferences in this series were held earlier this year at the Smithsonain Institution, Washington DC, and at the Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago. The San Diego conference is supported locally in collaboration with the San Diego Science Alliance.
