There are plenty of software options (including some freeware and shareware)
for making a PC or Mac run as an oscilloscope.  Do a Google search for
"oscilloscope software" or "oscilloscope software Macintosh."

For showing sound visibly, you may also be able to use one of the many
programs designed to edit and/or analyze sound files, such as Adobe
Audition.  

I'm not sure whether any of these programs have a view that is JUST the
sound waves without menus and other options for visitors to "fiddle" with.
Perhaps someone else has "test driven" various options and can make more
specific recommendations.

If anyone does know this I'd like to know too, especially if there is a
way to adapt a Mini Mac to the purpose of making it show a trace for
showing sound from a mic.
