ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I received this as part of another listserv I participate in. I thought it
might be appropriate for folks in the informal science world who facilitate
scientist-teacher partnerships.

Call for Participation in a Working Group to Draft a Book about
Scientist-Teacher Partnerships

Both in the U.S. and abroad, interest and participation in partnerships
between scientists and teachers grows each year. Though many programs have
successfully partnered scientists and teachers or schools, most have not
disseminated their partnership models and lessons learned.
We thus issue this invitation to participate in drafting a partnership
handbook. We are hoping to convene twelve science educators who currently
work at an organization that partners elementary, middle, and/or high school
teachers with scientists (defined as graduate students or above). This
group will determine the book's content, but possible topics include the
differences and commonalities in successful partnership programs, the
barriers to these programs and how one can overcome them, and the benefits
of partnership to teachers, scientists, and students. The audience for this
book will be scientists, teachers, science educators, and administrators
whose involvement with scientist-teacher partnerships covers the spectrum
from deep involvement to burgeoning interest. The book will be available
both as a hard copy and online.

The Details:
1) Interested participants must be able to commit to full attendance at the
following:

October 4-6 in San Francisco, CA
January 29-31, 2007 in Houston, TX
Travel expenses will be covered and participants will receive a $500
honorarium for their attendance at each meeting ($1000 total).

2) Participants will also need to commit to additional work that will occur
outside of the meetings such as completing drafts, reading and providing
feedback on the drafts, and updating them.

If you are interested, please submit your curriculum vitae and a short
letter of interest detailing your experience with science education
partnerships, your interest in helping to draft this manuscript, what unique
contributions/perspectives you could bring, and topics that you would like
to see included. Submit these by March 10, 2006 to Katherine Nielsen,
Co-Director, Science & Health Education Partnership, UC San Francisco, 100
Medical Center Way, Box 0905, San Francisco, CA 94143-0905; 415-502-5137
phone; 415-502-4846 fax; [log in to unmask] Criteria for participant
selection will include experiences in scientist-teacher partnerships and
publication and presentation record in related fields. In addition,
attention will be given to including participants who will provide a
diversity of science education partnership models, science fields, and
scientist or educator backgrounds.

Funded by a mini-grant from the HHMI Precollege Science Education Initiative
for Biomedical Research Institutions. Facilitated by Katherine Nielsen,
University of California, San Francisco; Nancy Moreno, Baylor College of
Medicine; and Cindy Keleher, Fox Chase Cancer Center.
