Here we have scientists who work in our research department, doing everything from running an endocrinology lab to tracking ocelots in Mexico to taking data from elephants 12 hours a day. They don't work in our education department, and are not generally working in public areas (except for a couple of elephant observation areas) but they do collaborate wonderfully with our education department on teacher workshops, summer camps, overnights...pretty much anything we can think of to get them involved.

We actually had one camper this summer who declared "I want to become a zoo scientist!" after she spent 20 minutes in 105 degree temps, in the sun no less (and on concrete...and it was uphill...okay not really on that last one) doing an elephant observation with Nancy Scott, one of our scientists, as a part of their camp activity. It was quite touching, especially considering that what she did was painstakingly record where an elephant was located in the exhibit every 60 seconds and then learned how to graph the data that was collected over time (using what Nancy has worked on for the past 3 months as the example for the graph).

It's been invaluable to our programs to have access to this kind of expertise. (Plus they're just a really fun group of people!).

I'm wondering what various science center staff members think of the value of having one or more "science people" on staff. By that I mean either professional scientists or other professionals with a strong background and knowledge base in science, besides just education staff.
