We had a lovely tubeless wind tube in our Hands on Science Studio, beginning around 1995 and I have to admit, I like the open concept better as well. Children can feel and experience the air in different ways.  I also notice that what they build and create has changed-not sure if that is a function of the tubes, materials or my fading memories.

And that is a bad thing? ;^).

BTW, the explo tinkering studio came up with a really cool tubeless wind tube design using a grid of straws suspended over the fan to create a laminar flow or some such explo arcana.  The bottom line is much more hands in/hands on than the tubes.
