Dan,

Two years ago, for our 60ft Planetarium, we installed our own in-house 'spherical mirror projection system'. The image quality is outstanding, and the budget we spent fits well under what you have listed. We had a local projector distributor bring in varying projectors and short throw lenses (per our throw/dome size dimensions) when we put the system together. They have projector techies who love unique applications and they brought us exactly what we needed.

The only drawback is the mirror and projector can occupy a few feet of space, although this can be easily worked into the building structure if planned ahead of time.

Jack Dunn at the Mueller Planetarium in Nebraska was instrumental to us in this process as well.

Let me know if you want any additional information.

I have used projectors for fisheye dome projection for many years and have never had a problem with lamps. If you want to use a fisheye lens system, I suggest you contact eluminati.

Best regards
Glen

The usual way to do this would be to have several projectors around the
edge of the dome projecting across the foyer. Erich is right about
projectors really not liking to be vertical unless they are designed for it.

Another approach is to use a convex mirror. Google convex or spherical
mirror projection.

Good luck!

Our budget would probably be under $50K and installation is approximately two years from now; however, the architects would like to know as much as possible at this time. Please note too that light levels will undoubtedly be high in the foyer (compared to a regular planetarium)
