Hello Marta -

Boy, it would be interesting to see some research on that subject. We recently produced a traveling exhibition on the evolution of maize, based on the research of a group of collaborators from across the US who work on maize genetics, maize diversity, crop improvement. Their research is entirely funded by NSF, and the project has nothing to do with GMOs, Dow Chemical, Monsanto, etc. However, when talking up the exhibition around town here in Ithaca ("Berkeley East", as I, a Californian, like to call it) or giving tours of the exhibition once it was up, I was usually asked was "Was Monsanto involved in any of this???" Bottom line was, we seemed (anecdotally) to have much more credibility for the exhibition because it was NOT funded by industry.

We've had some exhibitions and programs in the past that were in part funded by industry; oil companies, etc. and we've been very grateful for their support. We certainly thought long and hard about that company's image and how the public would react to their involvement before making a decision about accepting funding.

Research on this subject would most likely be regionally-specific; knowing your own demographic would be valuable, but extrapolating much of the information to other venues may not be valid. When the Evolution of Maize exhibition tours the Mid West, I expect to see different results from the evaluations than when it tours, say, Coastal California.

As the Maize exhibition tours, we could put in some questions in the evaluation about the perceptions of industry funding - give me a holler if you're interested.

Good Luck and I'd like to hear if you find anything –

Cheers -- Carlyn

Hello All,

Christine Reich and I are conducting research on visitors’ opinions of
corporate sponsored exhibitions. Do you know of any literature or
evaluation studies that pertain to visitors’ perceptions of corporate
sponsors and/or the content of such exhibitions?

Thanks in advance!

Marta Beyer
