Do you have an extra solar cap?  We let the kids look through that at the sun while they're waiting in line.  How about printing out a bunch of copies of these sundial templates on card stock and letting the kids fiddle around with them? http://www.mysundial.ca/sdu/sdu_sundial_kits.html  That website has very simple to extremely advanced sundials.
