To all ASTC members - I have been asked to pass along this call for
nominations for the Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award. To be
considered for the Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award, an
individual must be nominated and a complete nomination package
submitted by April 30, 2004 (postmark date). Dale

The Maria Mitchell Association offers an annual award of $5,000 to
recognize an individual whose efforts have encouraged the advancement
of girls and women in the natural and physical sciences, mathematics,
engineering, computer science and technology. Maria Mitchell
(1818-1889) was America's first woman astronomer and first woman
astronomy professor. While there are many awards for scholastic and
professional achievement in the various fields of science, they
believe it is equally important to recognize the people whose
influence and support make it possible for girls to become engaged in
science and for women to reach the same high levels of accomplishment
as their male peers. The first award was presented on October 4,
1997. The eighth annual award, to be presented on October 1, 2004,
will be given to a recipient selected by a national jury of
distinguished educators and scientists. Nomination forms are
available from the Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award Committee at
the Maria Mitchell Association after February 15, 2004 or on our
website: www.mmo.org.
