Greetings from the Rome Maker Faire! It was very exciting to be in the
audience for a surprise announcement from the head of Intel (Brian
Krzanich) and the head of Arduino (Massimo Banzi) regarding a new
partnership that will put the Intel chip on Arduino boards, starting with
the Galileo board that will be available in a few weeks.

Brian told an interesting story about trying to pitch a customer on using
Intel hardware and discovering that no matter how much Intel dropped the
price, his customer insisted on sticking with Arduino because of the robust
user community of people sharing open-source hardware and software related
to the Arduino. The Arduino is a circuitboard that sells for about $35 and
can be used to load simple code to control real-world objects (lights,
speakers, motors).

I got to hear Massimo Banzi at the New York Maker Faire and then raced home
from the New York Maker Faire to see him again in Chicago with a group of
only about 30 people, where I got him to sign my Arduino-driven haunted
doll house. At that talk he mentioned there were 4.7 million independent
users connecting to the Arduino site from June to August of this year. The
amazing thing about this open-source community is that someone somewhere
has written the little bit of code that you need to connect just about any
device to any other device via the Arduino.

I'm posting updates on the Rome Maker Faire at my web site Teknistas.com.
