Hi,
We've had a globe that visitors touch on the museum floor for over nine
years. It's a 16" 1:32,000,000 plastic relief Scan-Globe. I believe it
came illuminated, but we removed the interior lamp.
We have kept the original meridian circle. We have set it in a tilted,
slotted, semi-circular wooden base. Two small aluminum clips keep the
globe from being lifted out, but visitors can turn the globe and adjust
the pole angle from nearly horizontal well past the other side of
vertical.
I believe we've had to replace the globe itself at least once due to
visitors' pointing out to each other the location of our museum in Saint
Paul. However, the mount has proven sturdy and hasn't been modified.
Send me a note if you'd like me to take and send a photo.

Anyone have experience using a prefabricated globe with visitors on the
public floor? What types have you tried? Are they strong enough for public
hands? Results Disasters? Any tips?
thanks,
