There's a book that looks at the history of our drinking water by a guy named Robert Morris, it's called "The Blue Death: Disease, Disaster, and the Water We Drink".  I heard the author speak and the upshot of his talk was that water filters, either tap or pitcher, are a pretty good idea!  The book covers various water borne illness epidemics, both historical and more recent, like the 1993 Milwaukee cryptosporidiosis outbreak which made over 400,000 people ill.  The book also looks at the strategies our modern water systems use and the additives that are used in our drinking water.
