The California Science Center is currently building a stream table. During
prototyping, we used a plastic grit material. Different sized pieces of the
grit were different colors. When water was dribbled down the table, the
colors separated, graphically showing the distribution of material down the
stream. The material was easy to clean and not as dirty as sand.
We have been working with Creative Machines in Tucson, AZ, on this. They're
great people. Contact them for more info.

Subject: Sand in a stream table

We are planning a stream table with sand for a traveling exhibition (for
children ages 3 to 8) and would like to know other people's experiences with
design, maintenance, and safety. How has sand worked? Are there other
materials to use instead of sand that work better (e.g. pea gravel, plastic
pellets)?
Thanks for any feedback you can offer!
