Two commentaries on the published account moving butchering and meat
consumption further back in time to the time of Lucy Further back than
previous evidence. Speculation, but not evidence, suggested that at some
time early humans moved from a diet of vegetable matter to one relying
heavily on meat. There are interesting suggestions that early humans
planned—looking for food outside of forested areas, probably scavenged meat
rather than hunted game, were somewhat opportunistic using natural stones
rather than tools they made for the purpose of butchering and maybe carried
the tools with them.

Though the report is not without controversy as it is seemingly the first
discovery of its kind and the results need to be vetted by other scientists.
It is interesting to read in the NYTimes some scientists reactions that seem
to be defending their turf.

This report brings changes in diet and jaw structure into a broader
perspective.
