I don't know that this would be engaging to everyone, but I was amazed to find Marathon Water Heaters lose approximately 1 degree F per day if it were to lose power.  The other impressive feature is the tank is not made from steel and is estimated to have a MUCH longer life than ordinary hot water heaters.  It may not have the sex appeal of aerogel, but can be very interesting to the person paying the hot water bill.
