ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Teachers have been under a lot of pressure for many years to "teach beyond
the textbook." That said, they have few opportunities to learn how to do
this. The pressure of tests (sometimes tied to their salaries!) makes the
learning of new teaching techniques even more challenging. This is not a
great environment to demand that teachers 'think outside the box!"
Science Centers do almost all of their communication using the techniques
of informal education. In addition, they often have, know where to source,
how to maintain, how to use equipment and supplies appropriate for the
classroom.
So it can be argued that in many communities the local science center is
better suited to provide PD in some or all of the STEM curricula than the
school district, union, or local institutions of higher education.

*One of the most powerful ideas underlying science is that a small number
of simple laws guide the behavior of the natural world. If this is true,
why is science not taught that way in our schools?*
