Correct, Erich.

However, if you really want to complicate things it is the red blood cells that give blood its red color.  If all cells (red blood cells, white blood cells & platelets - not really cells...) are removed, the liquid portion of blood remains.  This liquid is called plasma and it is the color of straw -- a light yellow.

Not so simple, indeed!
