I'm writing a curriculum for middle school students (school-based) with
suggestions for younger and older kids. The focus is on use of used vegetable
oil (UVO) as a fuel.

Are there any safe/effective classroom demonstrations that would allow kids
to:

burn UVO and measure its energy (I remember doing that with a peanut and
water, but wonder if it's safe to do it with oil and a bunsen burner?)

burn UVO and diesel and measure its relative particulate emissions (one
person used filter paper to capture smoke, but again I'm not sure how
safe/effective that really is)

Any other science projects/demos related to UVO would be wonderful, too --
whether for elementary, middle or high schoolers.

Thanks!
