Both institutions I have worked in (Pacific Science Center in Seattle
and Bishop Museum in Hawaii) have always been open on New Year's Day.
At Pacific Science Center New Year's Day was generally
moderately-attended, at least compared to some of the other days during
the Christmas holiday season. It did give science center members a day
to come in when they could expect fewer crowds that usual during the
holidays, especially if there was a very strong exhibit or IMAX film at
the time. If I recall, the day's traffic flow was like your average
Sunday... very slow in the morning, quite a bit more busy in the
afternoon. (I left PSC in 1999 so things may have changed since then,
I'm sure current staff can comment on that).

At Bishop Museum we don't have the huge attendance spike over the
Christmas holidays that PSC had, though things do pick up esp. with a
strong exhibit. We had pounding rains last New Year's Day and we were
very busy...in a tourist market like Hawaii, people really did
appreciate having a museum option available on a rainy New Year's Day in
paradise!

Having been closed on New Years Day for many years, we are considering
whether there is sufficient audience interest to open for this holiday
(we are currently closed only three days a year: Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Years day). For those who are open on this day, what
is your experience with attendance? Do you hold any special events or
promotions to enhance attendance that day?

Many thanks,
