It seems to me that the take aparts I've witnessed are more about
mindless unscrewing than anything else. How can a person assess whether
or not a part is cool if there is no essential usefulness for the part
within the activity?

Though it would be difficult to pull off in an hour, you could split the
activity in two. One half or less of the activity is for taking apart
and the remaining time for constructing something out of those parts.
The PIE Network has many great ideas utilizing such junk.

I think choosing well the items you disassemble is critical. People
should readily find simple electric components like switches, battery
holders, motors, bulbs, potentiometers, etc, and simple mechanical
components like springs, levers, wheels, handles, balls, etc.

Finally, as mentioned earlier in this thread, avoid large capacitors or
at least let them sit around unplugged for a while so they lose whatever
charge they may have. I would also avoid powering anything with 120 VAC
wall power. Use batteries instead.

Forgive me if I didn't search the right words in the archives, but I'm
looking for tips on electronics take-apart activities. I know to avoid
TV's
and CRT monitors, plus wear safety glasses, but I'd love any other hints
anyone can offer! This will be for a one-ish hour session of summer camp
for
middle school girls.

Thanks!
