Wayne,  how about getting some to bring magnifying glasses and
(carefully) burn grass stems etc.  Or put sticks in the ground and see
how far the shadows move. Or use their watches to find south (hour hand
pointed at the sun;  then numerals 12 point south;  6 points north). Or
see which side of the trees moss grows on ....

If you give them numbers and call them to the telescope in order instead
of making them line up, they will be freer to do other things
(including, perhaps, things you'd rather they didn't do .....)
