I want to thank Martin and Bill for responding to my inquiry about whether STEM includes systematic training in wisdom traditions, East and/or West, or along the lines of Einstein’s notion of ‘spiritual geniuses.’ Einstein felt that in addition to objective knowledge, scientists required training in the art of daily living so that their actions would always relfect the best interests of all mankind.
Martin replied that there is not such formal training in the field that he knew of and Bill shared his excellent materials on Embedded Intelligence, EI, and wrote of inclusion of such principles at Notre Dame. Coincidentally, on the same day, a New York Times article by Dr. Ferric Fang, editorial chief for the journal on Infection and Immunity, ran on the alarming rate of retractions in scientific journals that, according to Fang, is a “manifestation of a much more profound problem — ‘a symptom of a dysfunctional scientific climate.’” I found even more troubling than the article were the more than 300 comments, many of which were posted by dedicated, and idealistic scientists who jumped ‘ship’ because of the toxic situation laid out by Dr. Fang. To read the full article, go to: http://tinyurl.com/7lwk79q (A version of this article appeared in print on April 17, 2012, on page D1 of the New York edition with the headline: A Sharp Rise in Retractions Prompts Calls for Reform.)
