Given the interest that many on this list have in this topic, you may be
very interested in the article "Science and Religious Fundamentalism in
the 1920's" in the May-June issue of American Scientist (p. 253-260).  I
was fascinated to learn that what I had heard about the Scopes trial was
grossly oversimplified and to see how the positions of "liberals" and
"conservatives" had shifted over time vis-a-vis the teaching of
evolution and why.  Just another example of the many complex dimensions
of this topic and a nice reminder that creationists vs scientists is too
simple a picture.
