It is incredibly tough for kids, though, to reference the idea that 2,000 BC 
(or BCE) is actually 4,000 years AGO.  Timelines do help -- but when they're 
not around, the mental math becomes very tricky.  I myself have a hard time 
with the idea of time running "backwards" before the time of Jesus...  or 
remembering that the time of Jesus was also the time of the Romans...

For many purposes, I would agree that this is a useful solution.  For
some dates, however, it is helpful to have an absolute reference.  This
is especially true for more recent dates.  Einstein's "magic year" of
1905, is 100 years ago, but only for this year.
