Well, basically, you have three choices, rear projected, front
projected, or monitor. You can probably imagine the advantages or
disadvantages of the projected images. Unless you have really large
images or irregularly shaped screens in mind, I would recommend
considering large monitors. It makes everything so much easier. A
42" monitor and a small computer can be gotten for under 2K for each
monitor/computer set. If you are going up to 50", then you can get
the whole setup for well under 4K. You don't have all the logistical
hassles of where to mount projectors, the image is going to be a
zillion times brighter (unless you go for some really monstrous
projection system). There are systems for tiling monitors that I
don't know much about, but they are very expensive.

I see you want to project on the floors also, so you could do a
hybrid of monitors and projection.

The CAVE systems are all about interactivity and 3-d ness, and that
is a whole other set of issues, and I don't think that they can
fairly be called "poor man's" approaches, since most of them are like
millions of dollars. I don't know about the Carnegie Mellon version,
any more pointers on that?
