Professional Development for teachers:

1. Keeps teachers engaged in the work you do/subject matter your organization focuses on

2. Keeps teachers up-to-date on new research, news, developments, in the field and in your organization

3. Keeps your organization on the radar of a variety of teachers and education professionals

4. Helps you establish a relationship with teachers--communicate with them about their needs, get their current contact information, meet face-to-face rather than only sending out newsletters/marketing pieces

5. Gets teachers in the door to experience what you have to offer

6. Hopefully translates into actual/more students using your programs/curriculum, visiting your site, attending events, etc...

7. Offers a legitimate service to teachers so they can demonstrate they continue to learn and develop in their own careers

Subject: Why do museums do teacher PD?

So, a question was posed to me today that I thought would be interesting to pose to the list-serv because I would be fascinated to see your replies, even if it's just from a few folks or many of you: Why do museums do teacher professional development?

We can't reach every teacher everywhere, so why do we do it at all?

I am not looking for a particular answer. I just want to experience the breadth of answers that I suspect would come out of posing such a question. Hope you enjoy noodling on that one for a bit. :>)
