Hi Nina -

I'm working on a similar summer workshop and would be interested to learn
about others' experiences building simple metal detectors also. Would you
mind keeping me in the information loop? Feel free to contact me off the
list...

Thanks so much,

Subject: simple-as-can-be metal detector?

Dear Science Whizzes,

I'm working on a spy gadget workshop in which the kids will build
several devices to use in a training mission where they have to escape
from a hostile compound. We're hitting a variety of stuff--IR goggles,
booby traps, UV detectors--and I want to include a simple metal detector
that they can use to sweep for bugs.

I thought I could do this with just a coil of wire, a 9V, and a speaker,
but all the geniuses on the web seem to say the simplest metal detectors
still need to have two oscillators to compare. Does anyone have any
experience building an EXTREMELY simple metal detector with a buzz that
increases as you get close to metal? Ideally, it would be simple enough
not to require a breadboard/PC.

Thanks!
