what's wrong with acetone?

It used to be nail polish remover, cosmeticians still use it as a skin cleaner when they're trying out different products on your skin.  You don't need a lot for the chromatography experiment -- I use a few snippets of grass and about 5 mls of solvent per student.

Ethanol works pretty well, too.
