Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I think a good place to start, if  you have not already, is to read Nina 
Simon's The Participatory Museum.
It talks a lot about community with lots of good examples.  I believe 
you can read it online if you prefer to check it out that way.
