Age 13 is when most website terms allow kids to participate in social
networks without parental consent. This is based on the Child Online
Protection Act. Of course you still need to be mindful of the kind of
information teen are sharing, but if your audience is 13+, you have a
lot more freedom in terms of parental consent than you would with
younger kids.

Feel free to contact me directly offline, Dan, if you want to chat more
on this topic. PBS Kids has established consent/privacy policies for
children, since our audience is almost entirely kids under 13.

Hi Folks,

We're looking into an offsite outreach program that includes a community
website specifically geared toward teens. Part of our idea is to get
them signed-up online (including uploading their picture if possible)
wherever we happen to engage them. However, because teens are typically
out in public without their parents, we're realizing it's probably going
to be impossible to get parental consent for their child's involvement
in our program.

Has anyone out there ever tried something similar and did you come up
with any solutions for the parental consent issue?

Thanks for your time,

Dan
