We provide t-shirts for our volunteers to wear. We also offer vests if they chose not to wear the t-shirt, forget it, etc. Our staff wear royal blue with a gold logo and our volunteer shirts are navy blue with a gold logo and says VOLUNTEER under the logo. We are in discussions right now about nametags and thinking of offering a long sleeve T as we had into the cooler months. We also have a few lab coats available for them each day should they choose that.

Our summer teens get a different (brightly) colored shirt each year so that they are easily indentified.

Our Docents receive a labcoat of their own after 1 year of service along with their own set of "pocket Science" tools.

As an entire staff we are offered the option 2 times a year (fall and summer ) to purchase optional team wear..cardigans, pocket T's oxford dress shirts, denim shirts, rain wear, fleece jackets...our volunteers are also allowed to purchase these if they prefer. Many of them do especially the older women.

This still doesn't please everyone! : )

Hope this helps!

Subject: What do your volunteers wear on the museum floor?

Hello Listserv Experts,

I'm in the process of accessing and potentially revamping our volunteer
wardrobe, if you will, and I'd love to hear about what other places do to
make their volunteers easily identifiable by visitors. Currently, our
volunteers wear either a vest or a smock in a sort of dull teal with our
logo as a sewn-on badge. (They also have name tags.) Many volunteers do not
like these garments at all...and neither do I, truth be told.

I'm going to survey the volunteers to hopefully figure out their feelings on
the matter (what's really wrong with the vests?), but in the mean time, I
turn to you. Personally, I like the look of lab coats, but I recognize their
downsides: hot in the summer, fairly expensive to get in bright cheery
colors... What has worked well (or poorly) for you? Is there a way for
volunteers to be easily spotted but also feel comfortable? (And yes, I know
that you can't please all the people all the time, certainly not on a
budget.)

Thanks!
Isabel
