We manage as many as 20 traveling exhibitions for other owners. The owners
sometimes ask that no admission be charged for their exhibitions. Usually
this is because the project received government funding, and they feel that
charging an additional fee is not in the spirit of the funding they
received.

Most often, an additional fee is set by the host site. They weigh very
carefully (1) the sponsorship or funding they received to provide the
program, (2) the program's ability to attract an audience even with an
additional fee, and (3) their relationship to their community (what is
expected, required, how the institution is generally funded, other
commitments to schools and other civic groups, etc.

Most traveling exhibitions move three times a year and stay on a site for
three month periods. Exceptions are made, and some organizations do a double
venue. This saves in overall cost and also gives an organization more time
to build audience and momentum for a topic.

Does a special fee take away from regular attendance? Sometimes. Sometimes
an organization can use the draw from a particular program to not only build
audience, but to increase long-term support--memberships and sponsorships.
This may fall out when a program leaves, but over time it can build
incrementally to provide a larger support base. I hope this helps and would
love to hear from others...

Simple question: I would like to get responses as to admission to traveling
exhibits.

Do you charge a separate admission to traveling exhibits?
If answer is some yes and some no; which ones do you charge for and which
ones are included in admission? How do you make this determination?
What is the general length of time your facility has traveling exhibits?
Does the traveling exhibit add to the number of admissions to the main
science center?
Does the special exhibit take away from the number of admissions to the main
facility?

I appreciate any responses!
