We surprisingly have had a lot of luck with the small, cheap (~$60) direct to TV microscopes like the one here: http://bit.ly/mssznl. It has its own led adjustable light source built in, which we fixed at high, and the whole thing just plugs into an outlet and into the RCA video on the television. They come from China, but we have had good luck with them. Works really well on clothing fibers and fingertips (can see sweat glands!)
I didn't want to mess with anything that went through a computer, just wanted to show the image. We fixed the focus to the end of the scope, made a pvc housing for it and reinforced the cord. The case is a little worn now, but the microscope has worked unattended on our exhibit floor for over a year. And heck if it does go out, I don't mind paying the $60 to replace it for another year.
I think that you could make the case and fix the focus easy enough for it to work really well on a sample of pond water.

Hi all,
We're starting some public health-oriented activities. I don't necessarily want to get down to the microbial level, but we would want to have kids take samples from our reservoir and see what's swimming. I always default to Wentzscopes, but I've heard that the Scopes on a Rope have gotten considerably better than they used to be. Any ideas?
