Digital Media Internship in online outreach and science communication
Project Description
Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems (CCRE) is an interdisciplinary field research program based at the Carrie Bow Cay field station on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Belize. Located fifteen miles offshore on a small island, Smithsonian scientists and their collaborators travel there to conduct research on the biology, ecology, and geology of coral reef ecosystems. For 40 years, Carrie Bow Cay has been a productive venue for scientists whose collective body of work has advanced our understanding of the dynamics of coral reef ecology.
This internship will be focused on producing digital content with the intent of improving the CCRE program's internet presence and expanding its outreach efforts online. During a 12-week period we will pursue the following goals: 1) Produce digital images for CCRE website and Facebook page 2) Produce 3 or more short videos (up to three minutes in length) and 3) Produce one feature story for the CCRE website.
Content will emphasize the work of field scientists on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and will highlight the amazing biodiversity of the barrier reef and nearby ecosystems, framed within the context of current conservation issues facing the region. Final products will be published on the CCRE website (www.ccre.si.edu) and the CCRE Facebook page www.facebook.com/carriebowcay. Topics include: threatened species conservation, biodiversity, and coral reef ecology and conservation.
Time will be divided between administrative headquarters in Fort Pierce, FL and on-site at Carrie Bow Cay Field Station in Belize, Central America.
Qualifications
Experience with digital media production, website development, and communicating science to general audiences; a demonstrated ability in effectively communicating with others, a strong interest in marine science, and a willingness/ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including weekends and some holidays. Experience with underwater photography/videography a plus.
Applicants are required to be students currently enrolled in school or have graduated within 6 months of applying for the internship or plan to return to school within 6 months of completing the internship.
Award Package
$4200 for 12 weeks full time (480 hrs.), scheduling may be flexible
Timetable
12-week, full or part-time; Fall of 2012 (dates flexible)
