One option you may want to consider is a "digial" heliostat. We didn't
have enough sunny days here in Iowa (as is likely in the UK!)to justify
a real heliostat. In addition, contractors abhor the thought of cutting
holes in the roof a building. We had Jeff Kennedy Associates design a
system whereby a projector displays daily satellite images of the Sun
onto a table. The participant can select visible, ultraviolet and x-ray
wavelengths and using a joystick can scroll forward or backward in time.
It really gives a good sense of the Sun's rotation, as well as being
able to correlate sunspots with active UV and X-ray regions.

We also have an activity where students use ratios to determine the size
of the Earth and other planets compared to the size of the projected
Sun.

Does anyone know of a vendor of display Heliostats? I know of the
Sunspotter
but I'm looking for something larger and more spectacular.

Thanks
