Hi Max and other listserv folks,
Our group focuses exclusively on creating education materials dedicated to nanoscale science and engineering. (We're the Interdisciplinary Education Group (IEG) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (UW MRSEC) - sorry for all the acronyms.) We've developed interactive table-top demonstrations; K-12 classroom activities; museum exhibit prototypes (we're also part of the NISE network that Eric Siegel mentioned); education kits; college-level lab experiments; a board game, etc.. The topics that we've covered range from carbon nanotubes to memory wire (not actually nano) to nanowires to liquid crystals to scanning probe microscopy (SPM).
The packet of nanotech materials that Dave Smith mentioned is our 'Try This!' packet that we hand out at outreach events. As Dave mentioned, it includes a refrigerator magnet (an analogy to SPM), an LED flashlight, a piece of memory metal, and a fiber optic. We use the packets as props the "Exploring the Nanoworld" talks we give - to keep things interactive. We also have a small booklet that accompanies the 'Try This!' packets, should we not be able to cover all the materials in the packet or if we're handing out the packets without using them in a talk.
If you want to see some of the nano ed materials we've developed, please visit our web-site: www.mrsec.wisc.edu/nano. The organization is a little confusing, so if you have questions (about the web-site or about any other nano ed issues), please free to contact me: [log in to unmask]
