We never tried to estimate the amount of water lost every day, but it is
quite a lot, even without buckets etc: children manage to create a lot of
'splash'
We use an automated filling system.
and to avoid visitors standing in the water we have a drain with a wooden
grid to stand on around our water area

Have any of you needed to calculate water loss due to evaporation and/or
splashing on an outdoor water feature? Can you suggest a way to estimate
it?

The specific details are that we're planning to have about 200 sf of water
surface on a recirculating flow. Visitors will have access to it, but we
won't offer any buckets, scoops, or other obvious invitiations to pour
water on the ground.

thanks,
