Ian, 

It's a source of great and boring mystery to me as well.  I think I may have addressed it only to you, but am posting it more generally.  Our in-house lis serves don't seem to have all the built in strictures absolutely prohibiting a variety of rich content and long threads.  They are size limited with seems appropriate to me, but they're not tweet sized, and I not sure I agree with the underlying premise that less is better with respect to text.
