Hey, any excuse for a birthday party is fine with me.  Where's the cake?  And at least it's not 4.5 billion candles.

Last night I went to a local star viewing event and the two gentlemen who were doing the explaining each spent some time talking about astronomical distances, i.e. light years.  Even in the dark you could see(feel) people glazing over.  Similar thing happens when I discuss "geological time".  Science comes in all scales from the minute to the vast. It's hard enough just getting folks to understand the human-scaled day to day stuff.  We do what we can and hope they take some of it in and then build on it.

I'm off to a Gem & Mineral show where I will be at the Austin Paleontological Society's booth and will be doing a great deal of explaining about geological time, changing sea levels and extinction.
